Welcome to Wantage West NAG

What is a NAG?

Neighbourhood Action Groups (NAGs) are a key part of Neighbourhood Policing in The Thames Valley

A NAG is a multi-agency, problem-solving group that consists of relevant partner agencies, key stakeholders and, most importantly, members of the local community.

NAGs focus their work around the main priorities that are identified after consultation with the local community.

Members, who are all volunteers, take on responsibility for achieving certain tasks on behalf of their neighbourhood.

About Wantage West Nag

Wantage West NAG was set up in November 2006 by Wantage Neighbourhood Policing Team to bring together The Police, local councillors, representatives of various agencies, local community groups, local business people and residents with the aim of identifying local issues, working together to find specific ways to deal with the problems and actively putting these solutions into action. The overall intention is to make our community a happier, safer place for all who live and/or work here.

We identify the issues we deal with by putting out a questionnaire every 18 months to identify the three main priorities affecting people in our area. These 3 priorities are combined with 3 priorities brought by the Police Neighbourhood team (sometimes these priorities overlap and sometimes they are very different) We also deal with specific issues reported to members by local residents and policing issues as they arise.

Wantage West Nag is also committed to the promotion of ‘positive’ news about crime and policing. It has become clear from our surveys over the years that actual crime rates and PERCEIVED crime rates are very different and the fear of crime is as much a problem as crime itself in this area.

As a result we do our best to

  • Publicise the best ways to contact the Police using their latest technology
  • Publicise crime prevention advice to help residents feel more secure
  • Support the local Police in their efforts to be visible and involved with the community
  • Help the Police be aware of public perceptions
  • Publicise low crime rates and ‘Good News’
  • Publish a monthly update to keep residents informed of our work in ‘The Wantage And Grove Review’, ‘Grove Parish Newsletter’ and on the Thames Valley Police Website
  • Operate this website and our facebook page so information is readily available to as many people as possible
  • Involve ourselves in community and Police schemes to identify and protect vulnerable residents.
